The Best Vegan Places in Mexico City That You Need to Try

Mexico City. I hear the name and I immediately think of food. All the food. If you’re still only associating food in Mexico with burritos and quesadillas, you clearly need to get your butt to Mexico and see more of this incredible country. If you don’t think vegan food exists here, you are in for a shock because the vegan places in Mexico City, and the vegan scene in Mexico, is alive and thriving.

Mexico City should be your first stop- even if just for the food alone. And there is so much more than food to this place. This vibrant, vast metropolitan is bursting with culture and with flavor. It is one of my favorite places in the world, with some of the best food in the world- something I do not say lightly.

Mexico City has something for everyone and everything. The same is true for vegan places in Mexico City. There were just so many and I only had so much time and money, but I ate a lot. You can find a vegan version of everything and never too far away.

I could spend years in Mexico City eating out every day, and still not confidently be able to declare one place “the best” vegan food in Mexico City- I tried. Below I’ve narrowed down what I found to be the best vegan places in Mexico City and why you need to go. Like now. I’ll join you.

Por Siempre Vegana

Location: Roma Sur

I want this taco stand to follow me around for the rest of my life. I’m serious. It’s that good. It’s so reasonably priced too. Por Siempre aka “Forever Vegan,” knows what they are doing. They are definitely topping the list of best vegan place in Mexico City.

For those of us who can’t enjoy the traditional street taco in Mexico, this is how you can. They do every variation and more with the authentic street food flavors and prices but all vegan. At less than a dollar a taco, it’s a bargain. They use various types of fake meat, which is labeled, so you know what has what. You have at least 20 options to choose from too, with a huge selection of seasonings and even a drool worthy vegan pastry selection.

This taco stand is always busy. My favorite thing was seeing how many men frequented it and how every one of my meat eating friends I dragged there, went back on their own because they loved it. Be warned though- it may be a taco stand, but it’s also a popular taco stand. So if you go at lunch, it’s not going to be super fast. You’re definitely looking at a 20 minute wait, give or take.

While you can take it to go, I recommend eating there (meaning, standing on the street and playing with everyone’s dogs). Purely because they have so many free delicious garnishes and sauces, but they don’t provide plastic take away cups for them, which is great, so you kind of miss out on the full magic if you take it to go.

Ojo De Agua

Location: Just about Every Neighborhood

One of my favorite things about Mexico City is how many bodega natural health food stores there are. Most of these also serve food, with a casual deli vibe, counter service and limited seating.

That’s honestly my favorite way to eat- except this place serves food I can actually eat. Ojo De Aqua is extremely popular throughout Mexico, not just in Mexico City. Located in 9 different states, with multiple locations in each, it’s developed a positive reputation. While the food can be a bit hit or miss- the menu is extremely vast.

This is not an exclusive vegetarian or vegan spot, but it has so many vegetarian, and vegan options and substitutes. Everything is natural. They also have phenomenal gluten free bread, and some of the best coconut and oat milk matcha lattes in the city.

While the place is often packed, you can still snag a seat and even post up on your lap top for a few hours. The wifi isn’t incredible, but it does line one of the many parks in the city, and there is free, reliable wifi in every park. I usually connect to that.

A tip when ordering: This is a genuinely very clean health food spot. That being said, they don’t do heavy sauces, or seasonings, so food can be a little lackluster. They do provide lots of sauces to spice up your meals- on the side. Use it if you need it, I usually do. Also, stick to the items that are going to be pretty much guaranteed to be great there. For Ojo, that’s their extensive juice, smoothie and caffeinated beverage selections. For food, their sandwiches are the best things on the menu (re: that gluten free bread option is tastyy) and their salads are hearty. Go for the deli stuff and you won’t be disappointed.

La Pitahaya Vegana

Location: Roma Norte

Not only is the food at this Roma vegan gem beautiful and vibrant, but it’s also woman owned and openly LGBTQ friendly. They have an extensive juice and beverage menu, and some set breakfasts.

They also have a vegan version of traditional mexican staples- enchiladas, tacos, etc. Their menu may be a bit small, but the result is that everything is freaking delicious. Go for lunch or breakfast and you will not be disappointed by this casual but trendy spot.

Matcha Mio CDMX

Best vegan places in Mexico City
Location: Roma Norte

I may or may have a matcha obsession. It may or may not have only gotten worse after traveling the world. I’ve become a matcha critic, perfecting my taste buds to understand what makes a good matcha latte or not. While Mexico City has Matcha lattes just about everywhere, not all matcha lattes are created equal .

Matcha Mio is a matcha lovers, and vegans dream. A whole cafe- dedicated to matcha, in the center of Roma. Also, available for delivery on Rappi so you can get it whenever. So it’s not all vegan- but it is all vegetarian.

It has vegan desserts, vegan ice cream, and every vegan milk for your smoothie bowls and your beverages. They really just do casual, easy breakfast, desserts and drinks. They also sell their matcha, and a thoughtfully selected variety of goodies like speciality Korean face masks, vitamins, and jade rollers. Random, but they definitely did their market research for their target audience.

Los Loosers

Location: Condesa

This is the vegan restaurants of all vegan places in Mexico City. They do flavor, they do presentation, they do creativity. Just look at their photos on google maps: I’m not drooling- you’re drooling.

This is a great spot because you can go for basically anything. Brunch, lunch, work sessions, casual dinner dates, etc. They do a vegan spin on classic and traditional Mexican dishes and flavors. I would argue that if a vegan place is really good, they do a better vegan version than the original itself. It’s all about the creativity- and the non-existent post meal guilt and bloat- that gives fantastic vegan cooking it’s power. Let me know when you’re going- I’m coming.

The Green Corner

Location: Condesa

I’m all for one stop shops, especially those that know their target clientele. That’s The Green Corner. This is the largest and most extensive health food store in La Condesa. With both imported i.e. American and local products, they have everything you need. From beauty products, to wine, to groceries, to household items.

Next door, they have their own cafe. It’s really ideal for healthy brunches with friends or to go beverages and desserts. They have outdoor seating and a cute and hip interior. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon and make errands fun, social and tasty.

Vegamo MX

Location: Centro

This spot near the center has an extensive menu, blending new and old creations. With huge breakfast options including gluten free pancakes and creative matcha waffles to chilaquiles- you have a lot of choices.

This is basically the place to go if you want just about any comfort food, but done vegan and done right. Bagels, waffles, “omelettes,” salads, hamburgers, salads, and even pad thai. It’s an open air, rustic little cafe with a casual setting for casual fare.
